Nuclear Filter Technology has developed a Mobile Sampling System allowing for safe headspace gas sampling in drums.

The NucFil® Sample Port
Sample ports are installed with a remotely activated pneumatic device. Tests using florescent dye has shown sample ports are reliably installed in standard drum lids without risk of sparking or contamination release.
At the point of installation, lid thickness is measured with a high precision ultrasonic micrometer and field operators adjust installation pressure accordingly.
Remotely controlled installation is provided by radio transmitter.
The sample port penetrates the drum lid with an aluminum bronze housing that prevents sparking during penetration of the drum. The sharp point falls into the drum upon entry allowing an opening for sampling gases. The white band shown in the photo above temporarily secures penetration point.
After the sample port is installed, the closure screw is removed and a side port needle can be inserted through a septa to withdraw a headspace gas sample. The sample either flows directly to a Summa® canister or via a manifold to an integrated on-line analysis system.
NucFil provides WIPP Performance Demonstration Program (PDP) qualified TRU waste headspace gas analysis, both on-site in real-time, or off-site at our laboratory.
Post installation testing indicates no water entry at over 28" W.C.
  DOT Type 7A Certified.
TRU waste headspace gas samples in Summa® canisters are shipped overnight to our Golden, Colorado laboratory for analysis. Our WIPP Performance Demonstration Program (PDP) qualified GC/MS systems provide complete WIPP approved TRU headspace gas characterization.
